Soon after birth a mother and baby giraffe avoid the cover of trees and stand in the open, watching for lions and other potential predators. Recent research has shown that while lions prefer to catch wildebeest, once the migration has moved on, the territorial lions must stay where they are and they will switch their efforts to young giraffe so this mother has good reason to be concerned.
