Artist's Description

In 1573/74, during the Eighty Years War between rebellious Dutch cities and the Spanish king, who was also Lord of the Netherlands, the city of Leiden was besieged by Spanish troops. Finally in October 1574 the Spanish troops withdrew. Leiden was saved. The lifting of the siege is
celebrated every year on October 3 with parades, lots of music, a fair and so on. It is a bit like carnaval.

This photo was taken during the so called Grand Parade.
