Artist's Description

An ancient trade between the highlands of Ethiopia and the hottest place on Earth - the Danakil desert. The trade is based on the extraction of salt where it is hand cut in the Lake Asale region of the desert. The camels collect the salt and transport it to the highlands on an eight day cycle. The image was taken just after dawn when the camels, donkeys and their ‘leaders’ make their way across the sometimes flooded salt flats to the area of extraction.
